Workflows for growing smaller Wikipedias
This text sketches possible workflows for making small Wikipedias bigger using Minority Translate. The workflows should still be seen as tool-independant, since there exists other similar tools. It considers workflows both for multimember groups and single individuals.
Here a group is taken as consisting of one or more group leaders. The group leader's main role is to plan and make a selection of new content. A roadmap of the information wanted. This task can be divided into small portions. The selections are then written into lists or sessions and shared to the other group members. The communication between the leader(s) and the other group members don't need to be centralized and any group member can act as a leader on some content selection subtask.
Use of lists is more dynamic than sessions, but sessions can be quicker to start with.
The group leader manually selects the source languages and adds the wanted articles and saves it as a session. This Session file can then be worked upon offline. The Session file can be handed over to a group member who is willing to work on it. The completed work can optionally be sent back to the group member for review before publishing it (i.e uploading).
Lists are special Wikipedia pages that lists and categorizes articles. Because these lists live on wikipages, they can be collaboratively edited and added upon. Each group member can use the category labels to divide what is translated by whom. Lists can be used by groups or by individuals. The list recommendations are currently given at a specialized page in Wikipedia Meta. The developers have to update it manually though, so let us know if you would like to update it for quickest results.
Using Wikipedia article categories
This method needs no initial preparation or separate work for getting started with. Suitable for single translators (tahaks vältida sõna translator siin) who are interested in specific article categories, i.e Information Technology, All the lakes in a region, etc.
What articles to focus on?
Focus should be on the content transfer of encyclopedic information that is available in other languages. Distinct language and cultural aspects might not be available and is subject of creative content writing and is of huge importance for the local Wikipedia, but initially the focus should be on leveraging the encyclopedic information that is allready available in other language editions. This way makes the Wikipedia useful as an encyclopedia. The usefulness aspect is of great importance for getting more users to the Wikipedia and more users potentially means more active editors!
Regional categories could be a good starting point, e.g all lakes in a region, all major cities, botanical category of flora or fauna that lives in a region. Choice of region can be both geographically or culturally near regions.`1
What parts to focus on?
Method 1 - first paragrath
To minimize the initial work load only the first sentence or first paragraph can be translated or adapted. By Wikipedia standards, the first sentence usually communicates the essential point of the article content and may be sufficient information for some readers.
Method 2 - use templates
Many articles follow a template structure. For example all the cities or lakes in a region. This way a specific subject category can be covered minimizing the writers need for expressional creativity.
Method 3 - use categories
Information in the free encyclopedia is categorized. Categories exists for different subjects as Information Technology, Botanical or Medical articles. Different combinations of categories can be used to specify smaller and more concrete sub-categories.
